Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is developing passive sensors
that will allow aerial platforms to locate the source of hostile fire
from the ground.
The company has revealed first details of a system called the optical hostile fire source locator, or OTHELLO, which has been developed by its ELTA Systems subsidiary.
IAI said OTHELLO can detect and precisely locate the source of hostile anti-tank guided missiles, rocket-propelled grenades and cannon, and automatically transfer data to weapon systems that can neutralise the threat.
The company has not released further details about the system, which is intended to protect low- and slow-flying aircraft, such as helicopters.
