China’s New Y-30 Medium-sized Transport Aircraft

In the Zhuhai Airshow 2014  China will give flight show of its formerly confidential heavy transport Y-20 and display a physical Y-9, its new medium-sized transport. In addition there will be the model of Y-30 transport, a new medium-sized transport it is developing.
Y-9, the improved version of China’s Y-8 old transport, uses China-made 5,000 hp turbo-propeller engines with six-blade propellers of synthetic materials to increase its takeoff load, cruise speed and climbing ability, but its size is not large enough to carry modern tank with heavy armor and equipment or modern heavy attack helicopter.

China has to transport its heavy tanks and helicopters by train, which is not only time consuming but wastes precious flight time of helicopters.
Y-30 is being developed precisely to meet the need for carrying heavy tanks and helicopters.

Chinese Experts Says Y-20 outperforms Russian Il-76

China's Y-20 Military Transport Aircraft
China's Y-20 Military Transport Aircraft

China's first large military transport aircraft Y-20 carries the dream and expectation of millions of Chinese people. Compared with the Il-76MD, the Y-20 has larger volume, more reasonable fuselage space and layout, and higher engine power.

The Y-20 not only outperforms Il-76 but also has Chinese characteristics in super critical airfoils, integrated avionics, cabin equipment, composite materials and their processing.

The performance parameters of the Y-20 are quite close to those of Russian IL-476.Operated by three aircrew members, the Y-20 has the highest load-carrying capacity of 66 tons, a fuselage length of 47 meters, a wingspan of 45 meters and a height of 15 meters, and bears the maximum take-off weight of a little more than 200 tons. It has atraditional layout and strong adaptability to take-off and landing fields, as evidenced by being able to take off and land at airstrips and carry the vast majority of combat and support vehicles of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).

India"Not Satisfied" With Joint Indo- Russia Multi-Role Transport Aircraft Project

Indo-Russian Joint project to develop a multi-role transport aircraft is facing hurdles after the Centre raised objections over the business plan proposed by Moscow for the project.

India was "not satisfied" over the business plan submitted by the Russian side as there was nothing much for its engineers and scientists to do in the development of the proposed aircraft, Defence Ministry sources said here.

Defence Minister AK Antony had expressed India's views on the issue to his Russian counterpart Anatoly E Serdyukov during his visit to the European nation earlier this month for the 11th meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-MTC).

The two sides have now decided to hold a meeting next month to iron out the differences, the sources said.

Official News Chinese Y-20 Transport Aircraft Will Fly Next Year

Currently 603 Institute, XAC and SAC are developing an advanced 4-engine large transport (Y-20?) which is smaller than American C-17 and based upon some IL-76MD technology. As the result assistance was sought from Antonov Design Bureau in 2008. Its max payload was expected to be around 50t and max TO weight >200t. Fitted with high-lift devices along the wing leading and trailing edges, the aircraft is capable of taking off from relatively short and unpaved runways, making many temporary airfields behind the battlefield accessible. Currently it is unclear whether the aircraft will have an IFR probe installed or not. The prototypes and the initial batch may be powered by Russian D-30KP-2/WS-18 turbofans, later by the modified WS-10 (WS-118?). A full-scale metal mock-up (head section) of Y-20 was constructed by 2008 and the first flight is projected in 2012. On August 20, 2009 SAC started to build the rear fuselage of the first prototype. It was reported (April 2010) that the full-scale mock-up was completed in early 2010. It was also rumored that the aircraft might serve as the testbed for the Chinese airborne laser weapon prototype similar to American YAL-1 which is thought to be under development. In addition the next generation of medium transport aircraft was believed to be under development at XAC/603 Institute as well, powered by two modified WS-10 turbofans. Its max payload is around 25t.

Indian Biggest C 17 Globemaster III Heavy Transport Aircraft Deal With US On Hold

India to purchase C 17 Globemaster III heavy transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF), the Indian Ministry of Defence has asked Washington to come clean and disclose the comparative prices at which the aircraft has been sold to other nations.

The last-minute incident  has come after the ministry received several representations contending that the price being quoted to India for 10 heavy lift aircraft was inordinately high.

While the contract is in the final stage — commercial negotiations with manufacturer Boeing have been concluded —the ministry has sought a clarification from the US on the price of the aircraft, which is being purchased by the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route.

FMS is the US Department of Defense’s government-to-government method of selling US defence equipment, services and training.

“We have to ensure that we are getting the aircraft at the right price. The ministry has written to the US government for the price at which the aircraft has been sold to other countries. This has been done to get a fair assessment of the deal and put all speculation at rest,” a Defence Ministry official said.

Indonesia Look To Buy C-27J Military Transport Aircrafts

Indonesia Looking to buy an unspecified number of Alenia Aeronautica C-27J Spartans to augment its fleet of military transport aircraft.

It will assess the aircraft based on its "operation requirements, technical specifications [and] logistics support", says air force chief Air Chief Marshal Imam Sufaat.

Apart from the C-27Js, the service is also reportedly considering the Airbus Military C-295 that is licence-produced in Bandung by state-owned Indonesian Aerospace.

"We also need a middle transport fleet. This could be met with the procurement of C-27J Spartans. A CN-235 has the capacity to transport about three tonnes of load while a Spartan is able to carry a load of up to 10 tonnes," the air force chief adds.
